The dried leaves and sap of this herb act as a sedative, a hypnotic, and a nerve tonic. This herb has a powerful calming effect upon the nerves, and can be used as a remedy for insomnia, anxiety, and nervous tension. Because of its sedative action, it has the power to supress the tendancy to cough, and can be used whenever this is a problem. Externally, the milky juice from the stems and leaves has been used as a remedy for warts and poison ivy rash. This milky resin was once used in the manufacture of lettuce opium. The tea is made by placing two teaspoons full of the herb in a cup and adding boiling water. Allow to steep for fifteen minutes.
